The Monica Edwards Appreciation Society’s first visit to Westling (Rye Harbour, East Sussex) will take place on Saturday, 13th October, 2007.
Members and friends are all welcome and we hope you’ll bring your daughters to see where it all began.
We will convene at 9.30am sharp in the car park on the hard for a walk round Rye Harbour, followed by coffee at the Bosun’s Rest.
On the programme will be a visit to Cloudesley Castle (aka Camber Castle) and Winklesea (aka Winchelsea) with stops for refreshment as necessary.
Please bring comfortable shoes and waterproofs. There are lots of places to stop for refuelling but bring a packed lunch if you prefer. There may be places where access for the disabled is awkward but I don’t think there is anywhere that is completely inaccessible.
Sue, Joyce and Henrietta, the organisors, will be staying over so if anyone else is staying we could meet up for a meal in the evening. Rye, itself, is a very pretty town and well worth a visit. I can recommend the Rye model “son et lumiere” at the Tourist Information Centre on the Strand Quay, and Rye is “Tilling”, setting for the Mapp and Lucia stories written by E F Benson who lived in the house previously occupied by Henry James, the American author. The church, as M E describes it, looking like a Rhode Island Red surrounded by her chickens, is interesting and the climb up to the top of the tower is well worth the effort.
We can only suggest, not recommend, B&Bs but cut and paste the following link for B&Bs in the area:

If you would like to find out more about the visit or about the Society, (which was newly formed in summer 2007) or its magazine "The Martello" please email Henri on
